The authors had studied in the proceeding paper, the mechanical behavior of hollow gravity dam constructed in a narrow valley.
The Uchinokura dam was designed on the basis of the results obtained and the basic plan was,
(1) to make the excavated shape of valley symmetric,
(2) to make each constituent block of dam behave two-dimensionally, and
(3) increase the sliding resistance of dam,
by modifying the excavation line of foundation rock in order to provide mechanical stability of dam was expected.
A study have been performed by three-dimensional model test in order to confirm the results.
The following facts have been confirmed by this test.
(1) The condition of stress and failure characteristics show that the constituent block which is built on excavated terrace behave two-dimensionally.
(2) The tendancy of stress concentration is relaxated by modified excavation shape of valley even under a condition of three-dimensional stress.
The authors obtained sufficient evidence that the proposed design is rational.
