Social surveys measuring (1) images of the sea, ships and seamen, (2) ideas about marine affairs, (3) preference of the sea or land hobbies and sports, and (4) quiz scores towards literature, history and geography concerning the sea were conducted among the general and mercantile/marine college students in Japan and Germany. The German marine students were mainly brought up in the seaside districts before going to their schools, but the Japanese mercantile students came from almost the same districts as those of general college students. Marine students have more familiar or closer images towards ships and seamen than other students majoring social or natural sciences in both countries.
