In this paper I reviewed Ellin Oliver Keene's Literacy Studio and discussed formative assessment to foster independent readers. She proposed two important tools to teach and talk about understanding. The first tool outlines comprehension strategies that teachers can use to promote development, while the other describes the indicators of deeper comprehension. These tools give teachers and children a common reference point to use during discussions about the text. By using these two tools in reading conferences, students learn the comprehension strategies that help them better understand the text, which, in turn, promotes cognitive outcomes in reading. By learning and using the comprehension strategies, students will be able to apply this knowledge in other contexts to become independent readers. In addition, the use of the two tools in reading conferences with students can lead to more intellectual engagement and can promote higher-level thinking.
