    冷戦の終結が, 新たなパラダイムとして民族主義の台頭を生み出した。従前, 無意識下にあったこの民族の顕在化はスポーツの世界でも例外ではない。国家や民族という社会的な境界を越える「越境選手」をより強く意識せざるを得なくなっている。一見同じ環境下にあるように見える彼らからは, 異なるあるいは共通するメッセージが発信されている。本研究では, 海外への移籍と帰化動機に基づき「越境選手」を分類した上, 彼らの発信する「シークレット・メッセージ」を分析することを目的とした。彼らが帰化する背景には, それぞれ商業至上主義, グローバリーゼーション, 同化主義といった世界や日本の社会的事象との連関がある。

    A study was conducted to identify the most important factors involved in the process by which athletes overcome troubles while taking into account the limitations of the subjective socialization theory as a methodology. This study was undertaken by first examining the methodology, which consisted of the subjective socialization theory based on the context of lifelong socialization or resocialization. As a result, Erikson's theory of ego identity was confirmed to be a useful methodological framework. Secondly, we examined the way that athletes tend to overcome troubles based on the above framework by the "life history approach". The materials used were a biography written about Ruy Ramos (a famous former professional soccer star) as well as his own autobiography. These materials were selected because they demonstrate how he overcame some difficult problems. His example was also considered useful for understanding the limitations of the subjective socialization theory. The main findings of this study were as follows. 1) Not only "subjecthood" (autonomy) but also feelings (spirit or heart) and emotional support from others are the most important factors determining whether athletes can overcome their problems. In addition, Ramos' example suggested that an athlete's ego identity plays an important role in overcoming troubles. 2) The theory of ego identity, namely, the subjective socialization theory is useful for understanding the subjective process of athletes overcoming troubles and their resocialization. Unfortunately, this methodological framework cannot be utilized to understand feelings because it is based on a rational "modem subject". Such a study therefore also requires researchers to apply the above framework in a flexible manner.

     The purpose of this study was to interpret the institutional characteristics of organizing sport enthusiasts from the viewpoint of 4 Japanese soccer players in Germany, based on the theoretical framework of the subjective theory of sport organization. In this study, the institution of soccer in Germany was determined to be one that enables the organization of its enthusiasts. By clarifying its institutional characteristics, we demonstrate the direction through which the Japan Football Association could create and transform the organization of enthusiasts.
     The methodology used for our analysis was the life story interview method; the life stories of 4 Japanese soccer players in Germany were constructed based on interviews, and the institutional characteristics of soccer in Germany as recognized by those players were interpreted.
     Our analysis showed that, compared with the institution of soccer in Japan, the following are institutional characteristics of soccer in Germany as reflected in these players’ life stories: (1) A “Sport Ideology” component that emphasizes soccer play (practice) and separates evaluations in soccer from evaluations in everyday life. (2) A “Sport Rules” component, securing the opportunity for enthusiasts to play in official games and spending less time in practice. (3) A “Sport Symbols” component, such as rewards for enthusiasts. (4) A “Sport Behavior Patterns” component, such as promoting playing styles that respect individuals, and focusing on playing games, as well as drinking beer after practice and games. (5) A “Sport Civilization” component of such as guaranteeing the playing environment (soccer field) of enthusiasts. (6) A “Sport Organization” component such as a regional club league system (i.e. separation from school).
     These institutional characteristics can be interpreted as those that affirm the social character of enthusiasts, i.e. the institutional characteristics that give enthusiasts legitimacy. Therefore, it is a remaining challenge for Japanese sport organizations to create such institutional characteristics.

     From a constructionist perspective, this study analysed the extent to which sports coverage arouses public identity of belonging to a specific nation, focusing specifically on newspaper coverage of the 2023 World Baseball Classic in Japan, and clarified the type of ‘discourses of nationalism’ were evoked in the coverage. Three types of nationalistic discourse were identified: those centered around ‘us’ (1), discussions concerning the ‘other’ (2), and dialogues involving the ‘internal other’ (3).
     First, regarding (1) the ‘us’ discourse, we focused on comments about the style of play of Japanese players and the Japanese national team, which was dominated by the term ‘small baseball’ prior to the WBC 2023. ‘Small baseball’ is an offensive style of play based on the assumption that Japanese players are physically weak and that they score runs by hitting singles and aggressive base running rather than hitting home runs. As the tournament progressed, however, commentary on ‘small baseball’ diminished and the ‘power’ of the Japanese players was emphasised instead. At the same time, ‘togetherness’ was emphasised, and many episodes reinforcing this were reported.
     Next, with regard to (2) the ‘other’ discourse, we looked for comments that stereotyped the opposing nation. However, we did not find symbolic boundary-drawing expressions of self and other, or overtly hateful expressions towards the ‘other’, as is the case in British newspapers. However, this does not mean that there was no bias against the ‘other’ in the Japanese press. Japanese coverage of the WBC 2023 easily stereotyped certain nations by bringing in characteristics of other sports, and naively stereotyped nations such as Italy and Mexico based on the very broad regional characteristics of Latin culture. Such stereotypical commentary was more common in the sports press than in the general press.
     Finally, with regard to (3) the ‘inner other’ discourse, we focused on the representation of Lars Nootbaar, who was selected for the Japanese national team for the WBC 2023. Before and during the tournament, his dedication, courage and ‘uniquely Japanese’ style of play, as well as his attempts to assimilate into Japanese culture in various aspects, were positively reported. Such commentary was intended to underline his moral qualifications for the national team, and the term ‘samurai’ was used to bestow upon him a symbol of approval.

     イギリスのカルチュラル・スタディーズはどのようにサッカーというポピュラー文化に着目し、それを真剣に研究の対象やテーマにしていったのか。サッカーのカルチュラル・スタディーズがイギリスで出現してくる背景や文脈はどのようなものだったか。そして、現在のカルチュラル・スタディーズはどのようなモードでサッカーを批判的に理解しようとしているのか。本論はこのような問いに答えていきながら、過去50年に近いサッカーの現代史とカルチュラル・スタディーズの関係を系譜的に振り返り、その概観を示すことで、これからサッカーのカルチュラル・スタディーズに取り組もうとする人たちにとって、サッカーとカルチュラル・スタディーズとの基礎的な相関図を提供する。
     その余暇としての歴史はさておき、現代サッカーの社会学的研究は、サッカーのプレーそのものではなくサッカーに関わる群衆の社会学として、「逸脱」と「モラル・パニック」をテーマに始まった。 地域に密着した男性労働者階級の文化として再発見されたサッカーは、同時に「フーリガン」言説に顕著なように犯罪学的な視座にさらされてもいた。しかし80年代に入ると、ファンダムへの着目とともにサッカーを表現文化として捉える若い研究者が目立ち始める。それはサッカーが現代的な意味でグローバル化していく過程と同時進行であり、日本のサッカーやJ リーグの創設もその文脈の内部で捉えられなければならない。
     それは世界のサッカーの負の「常識」であり、カルチュラル・スタディーズの大きなテーマの一つでもある人種差別とも無縁ではないということである。サッカーという、するものも見るものも魅了し、ポピュラー文化的快楽の豊富な源泉であるこのジャンルは、同時に不愉快で不都合な出来事で満ちている。常に変容過程にあるサッカーを、その都度新たな語彙を紡ぎながら語るチャンネルを模索し続けることが、サッカーのカルチュラル・スタディーズに求められている。
