The subject of this paper is to respond to the question, specially from the standpoint of systems theory, how sociologists design the society as a whole in a "postmodern" age when so-called main paradigms of "grand narrative" are lost.
To accomplish this purpose, several types of systems theories are investigated (Parsons, Habermas, Giddens, Luhmann) , and their common features are extracted. Through this survey we could make it clear that systems theories of Parsons, Habermas and Giddens are common in character. Their images of society are based on the typical modern concepts of norm and order.
In contrast, Luhmann's systems theory is free from modern premises; norm, subject, centered-order and so on. Recognizing this tendency, we could understand the differences between two types of systems theories. The former is a modern type and the latter is that of postomodernity.
