To examine the reduction behavior of commercial sinter in the initial stage, the following analyses were done : Quantitative analysis of sinter before reduction was done by EPMA and the contents of hematite, calcium ferrite (CF), magnetite and slag were determined. Comparison between EPMA surface analyses of sinter before reduction and reduced to magnetite stage at 1 133 K suggests that CF breaks up into magnetite and slag during reduction. Quantitative analysis of sinter minerals during reduction to magnetite stage was done by the X-ray internal standard method using the above-stated contents. Variations in the amount of hematite, CF and magnetite with fractional reduction are revealed ; CF is reduced to magnetite at 1 033 and 1 133 K but is not at 933 nor 983 K. Microstructures of samples reduced up to magnetite stage show that CF is reduced at 1 033 K but not at 983 K. Final fractional reduction in the hematite to magnetite stage under rising temperature conditions up to 1 173 K,
Ff', was measured after measuring the one at a predetermined temperature,
Ff; below about 1 003 K, CF is hardly reduced and
Ff_??_0.7 when oxygen reducible in this stage is assumed to come from hematite and CF. The ratio
Ff/
Ff' is given as a function of reduction temperature.

An investigation on the distribution of MgO in the constituents of the self-fluxed pellets containing MgO was carried out by means of X-ray microanalysis and optical microscopy.
The results obtained were as follows:
(1) MgO content in magnetite was not always higher even if the chemical analysis of MgO of the pellets was higher, but depended rather on the FeO content of the pellets. Namely, magnetite contained 12.618.4% MgO and 4.57.0% MgO in the cases of FeO content of 0.271.45% and 2.606.74%, respectively.
(2) Observed MgO contents in the four phases in the pellets (MgO : 0.36.5%, FeO : 0.276.74%), were as follows : magnetite : 4.518.4%, Ca-ferrite : 0.86.0%, slag : 06.0%, and hematite: 0%.
(3) The magnetite phase in the self-fluxed pellets used in the blast furnace of Kobe Steel, Ltd. was proved to be a solid solution whose composition range was (Fe

The reduction behavior of calcium ferrite (CF) in commercial sinter in the initial stage was examined by the gravimetric method.
In a previous work, final fractional reduction,
Ff, obtained in the reduction stage from hematite to magnetite at
GR ≡
VCO/(
VCO +
VCO2) = 0.2 (
V: flow rate) and EPMA, X-ray and microscopic analyses clarified that at 1003 K and more CF was reduced to magnetite but below about 1003 K CF was hardly reduced and
Ff_??_0.7 when the oxygen reducible in this stage was assumed to come from hematite and Fe
2O
3 in CF.
In the present work, influence of both CO ratio
GR and reduction temperature T upon the reducibility was studied by changing either
GR or
T while keeping the counterpart constant. The following "quasiequilibrium line" below which CF was not reduced was found out within the magnetite stable region in the equilibrium diagram for Fe-C-O system:
T = 1030 - 10.2
GR - 801
GR2 (873≅
T≅1023 K)
When
GR or
T were decreased after CF was reduced, "re-oxidation" took place below this line. Long term reduction curve in twice as much as the period for ordinary experiments demonstrated that eight hours were long enough to judge the reducibility of CF and determine

Mixtures of fine powders with the basicities from 0.6 to 5.0 consisting of hematite (80%), slaked lime, and quartz were heated rapidly to 900-1400°C and cooled in air. The process of mineral formation of them during the rapid heating was examined.
At about 950-1000°C, calcium ferrite was formed and caustic lime originated from slaked lime was consumed completely. At the temperature lower than 1 150°C, quartz hardly reacted with other minerals such as hematite, caustic lime, and calcium ferrite. Thus, their microstructures changed, independently of their basicities, into those consisting of primary hematite, calcium ferrite, and quartz.
At the temperature higher than about 1 160-1180°C, calcium ferrite melted and reacted with quartz. By this reaction, characteristic microstructures were formed according to their basicity. The microstructure of mixtures with the basicity lower than 1.6 consisted of glassy silicate and secondary hematite originated from calcium ferrite. The microstructure of mixtures with the basicity higher than 2.0 consisted of calcium ferrite and dicalcium silicate.
On the basis of the above results, the microstructures and their formation processes of iron are sinters with various basicities were discussed.

The solution property of MgO containing materials into the CaO-Fe
2O
3 system and the melting property of MgO containing sinter during reduction were investigated. The results obtained are summarized as follows:
(1) The formation of high viscosity silicate and magnetite prevents the slag from being homogeneous and so Cr slag and Ni slag remain unslagged. The formation of dicalcium ferrite prevents periclase from dissolving into the CaO-Fe
2O
3 system.
(2) During reduction unslagged MgO makes the shell of solid solution of MgO-FeO with FeO in glassy silicate and its solution is negligibly low.
(3) For both normal sinter and pellet, all silicate minerals dissolve above about 1 240°C.
(4) MgO addition in sinter is effective to decrease slag quantity during reduction but the melting property of sinter is not so improved as that of pellet. The proper basicity for sinter and pellet is about 1.4.

製鉄所の高炉に装入する,焼結鉱の工程管理分析において,MgO源である蛇紋岩の粒度が,XRF分析値に影響を与えることが判明した.粗粒蛇紋岩(粒径1mm以下が40%程度)を使用すると細粒蛇紋岩(粒径1mm以下が80%以上)を使用した場合と比較して,MgOの分析値が約1割高値を示す.その原因を究明するために,蛇紋岩粒度と焼結工程でのスラグ化反応との関係を考察した結果,配合される蛇紋岩粒度が小さいほど,比表面積が大きく,かつ均一に分散するため,焼結工程においてmagnesioferriteの生成量が多くなることを,試料表面の元素濃度マッピングより明らかにした.このmagnesioferrite生成量の差が焼結鉱のXRF分析値に影響を与えることが判明した.

To investigate the role of Al
2O
3, in iron are sinters, constitutional analysis of high Al
2O
3 and low Al
2O
3 contained iron ore sinters was carried out by applying EPMA random sampling method. Measured compositions were mainly located around the two tie lines of CaO·SiO
2-CaO·3(Fe, Al)
2O
3 and 2CaO·SiO
2-(Fe, Al)
2O
3. It was found that Al
2O
3 had a tendency to concentrate in calcium ferrite, especially in that of composition of Fe
2O
3 from 40% to 60%. MgO content in sinter are decreased with SiO
2, but CaO content increased with SiO
2. This reverse tendency suggests that the role of CaO and MgO in iron ore sinters can be different.

2O⋅MgO⋅SiO
2 s.s. formed also solid solution with K
20⋅Al
2O
3⋅SiO
2-K

3 s.s. which was a K
2O-rich compound in K

2 system. As a result, the new quarternary compound in K

An investigation has been made of the permeability resistance of iron ore pellets and sinters in the softening and melting zone, which has large influence on the productivity and the fuel ratio in the blast furnace perfbrmance. The results obtained are as follows:
(1) The pressure drop in this zone greatly increases as the FeO-containing slag melts and flows out into the void in the packed bed of pellets of sinters.
(2) MgO addition in the pellets is effective to decrease this pressure drop because, during reduction, MgO makes solid solution with wnstite called magnesio-wnstite with higher melting point.
(3) By X-ray microanalysis and optical microscopy Mg has proved to be concentrated in the magnetite and Ca-ferrite in the MgO added pellets before reduction.

The minerals and their composition of iron ore fluxed sinter are important factors on sinter qualities as the constituent of the matrix. The present work was carried out to predict the produced sinter mineral composition (hematite, magnetite, calcium ferrite and slag) prior to sintering with the use of material imformation. On the composition of sinter minerals, hematite and magnetite are determined with the iron oxide form and coke content in mix, and calcium ferrite and slag are influenced by SiO
2 and Al
2O
3 in mix. The model prediction was in relatively good agreement with the observed values by quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis.

A study on degradation of sinter structure during low temperature reduction has been made by considering strain formation in mineral phases and propagation of crack in the structure.
The results obtained are summarized as follows:
(1) The degradation is observed in any sinter structure, however the cracks propagated through melting bonded sinter structures are comparatively longer than that through diffusion bonded ones.
(2) X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the spacing of lattice planes of alumina containing skeletal hematite are shrinked compared to that of fine type hematite. One of the causes of the degradation is considered to be due to the shrinkage.
(3) X-ray line broadening analysis revealed that the value of nonuiform strain in magnetite phase obtained from 550°C reduction was higher than that from 900°C reduction. The higher nonuniform strain is considered to cause the degradation during only low temperature reduction.
(4) By a statistical analysis of the crack propagations through various mineral phases, prismatic type calciumferrite and glassy slag were estimated to be unsuitable for sinter structure.

At Chiba No. 1 blast furnace, fine materials condensed from the gas phase were sampled by the use of a vertical probe inserted into the furnace from the top. After the sampling the materials were examined by chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction. On the basis of the examination the in-furnace circulations of zinc, alkalis and their compounds were discussed through thermodynamic calculation. The results of the dissection survey of blown-out furnace could be well explained by the calculation result based on the measurement.
An important role of the circulating materials, especially zinc and its compounds, in the formation of scaffold and inactive zone near the wall also was pointed out.
