Based upon spontaneous symptoms and simple objective observation we divided sciatica into 5 types-posterior type, anterior type, lateral type, combined type and organic type- and studied the relationship between the various types and the underlying disease.
101 sciatica patients were used as subjects in this study. The diagnosis of the orthopedist was accepted as verification of the underlying disease. Results showed that Organic Type sciatica was most prevalent with underlying diseases of deformative spondylosis in 31 cases, followed by protrusion of the intervertebral disk in 18 cases and 18 cases of undertermined cause involving no skeletal changes.
Classifying the disease according to the absence or presence of bone changes and the seriousness (lateral type, combined type, organic type) or mildness (posterior type, anterior type) of the disease type in order to get a relationship quotient shows that Q=0.84 indicating remarkable relationship between the two.
It had been known from previous study that classification of sciatica according to type plays a useful role in the selection of acupoints and treatment techniques and also makes possible prognosis conjecture. This symptom classification takes on another new significance with the addition of its usefulness in making it possible to a degree to guess the underlying disease.
