    This study examines the war-damage and the reconstruction planning in Nago City, Okinawa Prefecture. For example, how was the war-damage in Nago different from ones in the Japanese mainland? Then, what had the reconstruction planning been made in utter confusion? Especially, how was the land readjustment without rule of system and financial help? After that, I try to estimate and consider the land readjustment in Nago.

    The longitudinal distribution and dietary habits of five and fbur Rhinogobius species were investigated in the Genka River of northern Okinawa Island, Japan. Two sampling points for the assessment of fbod habits, and locations for determining longitudinal distribution (n=13), were identified along the length of the Genka River. Habitat prefbrence was observed to be relatively discreet among the five Rhinogobius species sampled: R. giurinus was distributed from the tidally influenced river reaches to the lower river reaches, R. sp.MO was commonly fbund in the middle river reaches, R. sp.CB was fbund in riffles along the length of the river without the lowest and uppermost stations, R. sp.DA occurred from the middle to the uppermost river reaches, and R. sp .BB was commonly found in pools from the middle to the uppermost reaches of the Genka River. Four Rhinogobius species (MO, CB, DA, BB) were found to feed primarily on Trichoptera, with R. sp.CB and R. sp.BB also observed to feed on terrestrial insects. R. sp.DA observed to feed on molluscs (snails). These findings suggest that the members of Rhinogobius species assayed in the Genka River have become somewhat specialized with respect to habitat (5 species) and food prefbrence (4 species).

    Ixodid ticks were recovered from various animals in the northern area of Okinawajima Island, Japan, in the period 2016–2021. The ixodid tick species Rhipicephalus sanguineus (n=39), Haemaphysalis hystricis (n=20), and Amblyomma testudinarium (n=1) were recovered from dogs. Similar tick species, namely H. hystricis, Haemaphysalis formosensis, and A. testudinarium, were recovered from cats, Ryukyu long-furred rats, and rabbits. Our results suggested that these three species are the dominant ticks that feed on small and medium-sized mammals in this area. Furthermore, A. testudinarium and H. hystricis were detected on human clothes, and A. geoemydae was recovered from Protobothrops mucrosquamatus.

    Cement roof-tile in Okinawa had a great impact on the formation of the Okinawan landscape. This cement roof-tile was brought from Taiwan and produced mainly in Nago City, Okinawa, and spread widely throughout Okinawa. However, Currently, cement roof-tile is not being produced. The purpose of this study is to investigate the situation of cement roof-tile in Nago City and to clarify the vicissitudes of cement roof-tile and their uses in building components. The results of the survey showed that cement roof-tile use was on the decline. However, the survey also revealed that cement roof-tile is used in distinctive ways.

    沖縄本島北部の国頭村で捕獲した野猫127頭を用いて,Lynxacarus radovskyi(猫柔皮ダニ)の寄生状況を調査した.全身麻酔下の猫から,目視及び触診後にノミ取り櫛で体表をすいてサンプルを採取し,顕微鏡下で外部寄生虫の同定を行った.野猫の93.7%(119/127)(95%信頼区間(95%CI):87.9~97.0%)で何らかの外部寄生虫を認めた.L. radovskyi の寄生率は12.6%(16/127)(95%CI:7.8~19.6%)で,ノミ93.7%(119/127)(95%CI:87.9~97.0%)に次いで高かった.本種が寄生した猫では皮膚病変をあまり認めなかったが,全てでノミの共寄生を認めた.性別や幼成別による寄生率に差を認めなかった.国頭村の複数地域の野猫で本ダニを検出し,四季を通してその存在を確認したことから,本調査地域はL. radovskyi の分布域に含まれることを証明した.本ダニは猫で病状を示すことがあるため,沖縄では他の外部寄生虫と共に注意が必要である.

    Fruitlet core rot of pineapple (Ananas comosus) has been found in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan since a few decades ago. A fungus frequently isolated from the diseased fruits was identified as Fusarium ananatum based on morphological and cultural characteristics and molecular analyses of EF-1α,β-tubulin and histone H3 DNA sequences. The isolates reproduced the symptoms on pineapple fruits after inoculation using toothpicks and were reisolated from the inoculated symptomatic fruits. This is the first report of fruitlet core rot of pineapple caused by F. ananatum in Japan, and we propose the Japanese name “shoka-fuhai-byo” of pineapple.

    沖縄県農業研究センターで保存するパインアップル18品種・系統のカロテノイド含量・組成を明らかにするためHPLC分析を行った結果,パインアップル果肉部のカロテノイドの蓄積量により3つのグループに分けられることが示された.すなわち,ビオラキサンチン,9-cis-ビオラキサンチンと β-カロテンを多く含み,カロテノイドの総量が1000µg/100g-FWを超える高蓄積タイプ(「A882」等),ビオラキサンチン,9-cis-ビオラキサンチンと β-カロテンを中程度に含み,総量が500~1000µg/100g-FW程度の中蓄積タイプ(「ゴールドバレル」等),総量が500µg/100g-FWよりも少ない低蓄積タイプ,であった.さらに低蓄積タイプにおいては,カロテノイド少量蓄積する品種・系統(「N67-10」等)と,ほぼ蓄積しない品種・系統(「ソフトタッチ」等)に分けられた.カロテノイド蓄積量によるグループ分けは果肉色の評価区分とよく一致していた.これらの結果は,パインアップルの高品質・高付加価値化のための高カロテノイド品種の育成に役立つものと考えられる.

    This paper is a preliminary note for the world-wide comparative studies of man-induced erosion from the viewpoint of environmental geomorphology.
    The “geologic norm” or the background level of the rates of natural erosion and the order of the magnitude of accelerated erosion induced by man's impact on physical environment are summarized for the whole world and Japan based on previously published data. As a result, it is tentatively concluded that the rates of natural erosion which are used as the background level may be in the order of 100-500 m3/km2-yr for mountainous regions except for high relief mountains and 10-50m3/km3·yr for hilly lands and uplands. Based on the data obtained from the measurement at the experimental plots, the rates of erosion on the farmlands of Japan are estimated as 50-500 m3/km2·yr for ordinary crops, 500-1500m3/km2·yr for orchards without mulching and 1500-2000m3/km2·yr for bare lands. These values are generally smaller compared those reported for the croplands in the United States in 1930' s when a large-scale uncontrolled monoculture such as cotton and maize predominated.
    It is worthy to note that in Japan well-managed and terraced puddy fields have greatly contributed to the prevention of accelerated soil loss from cultivated hillslopes since ancient times.
    Since 1960 's soil erosion and accompanying sedimentation due to large-scale urbanization and highway construction have caused serious problems in many countries, particularly in the United States and Japan. The rate of sediment yield from the small catchments affected by the construction works increases from 5 to 500 times and more that associated with the same terrain under cover of forest and rural land use, and often reaches on the order of 10000 m3/km2·yr (WOLMAN, 1975).
    Based on the data on the land use change from agriculture or forestry to urban and forestry to agriculture, extraction of mineral resources including gravels and sands and coal mining, it is estimated that the total amount of direct denudation caused by man may be about 1.8 billion m3/yr for whole Japan for the year of 1970-1972. This is equivalent to the annual removal of earth materials 4800 m3/km2·yr (4.8 mm/yr) and is seven times higher than the mean rate of erosion in mountainous regions of Japan (680m3/km2·yr).
    An example of man-induced erosion under humid subtropical environment (mean annual temperature 22°C, mean annual rainfall 2400-2600 mm) is reported for the northern part of Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands. Since 1960 's highly accelerated erosion of reddish soils derived from deep weathering of phylites and slates and Plio-Pleistocene sand and gravel deposits has occurred due to a large-scale pineapple cultivation in the hilly lands and uplands. In addition, sediment yield has greatly increased by the construction of housing lots, roads, etc. since 1970's. Observations on the bulldozer-shaped slopes on which B-horizon or reddish weathered zone expose, show that both bare land under construction and farmland cultivated with first-year pineapples in rows downslope produce a great amount of sediment, estimating 10000-50000m3/km2·yr and more. In the case of reclaimed land built on the former small valleys, filled-in soils are rapidly eroded away by large gullies which follow former stream lines and the amount of eroded materials even by a single gully often exceeds 10000m3/yr. Red-colored suspended sediment derived from such source areas has been transported to the sea within a short time, resulting in silting problems along the coral reef coast.

    This paper attempts to verify non-historical time in Okinawa through the payment rate of the government pension plan. The national pension fund payment rate in Okinawa Prefecture has stayed in a low level. The phenomenon is remarkably seen in not only Okinawa Prefecture but also Amami Islands in which belongs to Kagoshima Prefecture. In other words, the low degree of the payment rate of the government pension plan is a phenomenon in which seen in Okinawa in a wide meaning that contains it from Amami Islands to Yaeyama islands. It can be expected that the time consideration of future is immature, and will not be made as an object in Okinawa if it is assumed the system that the government pension plan secures the future old age. It also can be said that the false time sense will not have been made as an object yet in Okinawa in case of the time consideration of future is set on the place where Hellenistic time of the quantity intersects with Hebrainisitic non-reversible time. It is still left as a fabric of society even though repetition time sense of primitive community received a modern transformation. Therefore, the mythological time and space in the myth of the beginning of the world can be a structure in which is connected to present time not as a discrete things.
