    This study investigated the effects of a one-day exercise program for children not good at exercise, measuring their motor ability, their awareness during exercise, and the continuity of their attitude toward exercise. The participants were 39 fourth-grade elementary school students (boys: 21, girls: 18). The exercise program lasted for about seven and a half hours including breaks. It involved motor ability tests that consisted of running (25 m run), jumping (standing long jump), and throwing (softball throw), and video- recorded them, before and after the program. Before, immediately after, and one year after the program, the participants completed a four-item questionnaire survey to measure their psychological states. The results revealed significant differences in the motor ability and the observed-movement tests. In terms of motor ability, there was a significant improvement in the participants’ softball throw by the program’s end, although there was a significant decrease in performance in both 25 m run and standing long jump. In terms of observed movement, however, there was a significant improvement in the participants’ running, jumping, and throwing movements. The results suggest that the one-day program of this study can improve motor abilities and enhance awareness of the benefits of exercise among children who are not good at exercise. The follow-up questionnaires showed that the children’s positive attitudes toward exercise were still maintained one year after the program.

    This study aimed to track the degree of physical fitness in children, by examining the relationship between physical fitness levels at 6 and 12 years of age using longitudinal data. Participants included 194 children (104 boys and 90 girls) who performed physical fitness tests at the ages of 6 and 12 years. We conducted 7 exercises at 6 years of age and 8 at 12 years. We calculated Pearson's product moment correlation coefficients between fitness levels at these two ages. Significant correlations were observed in all of the items assessed in boys at the two ages (jumping power: r=0.592, muscular endurance: r=0.314, flexibility: r=0.286, running ability: r=0.840, throwing power: r=0.673, agility: r=0.385, muscle strength: r=0.444, overall physical fitness: r=0.717). In girls, significant correlations were observed in jumping power (r=0.297), flexibility (r=0.334), running ability (r=0.562), throwing power (r=0.338), agility (r=0.292), and overall physical fitness (r=0.534). The flexibility item was found to track fitness to a significantly higher degree in girls compared to boys. The items of jumping power, running ability, throwing power, agility, muscle strength, and overall physical fitness, were found to track fitness to a significantly higher degree in boys compared to girls. In boys, running ability, throwing power, jumping power, muscle strength, muscle endurance tracked moderately well during the study period. In girls, running ability tracked moderately well. These results suggest that the physical fitness levels of boys and girls at 6 years of age predict their fitness levels at 12 years of age moderately well. In addition, fitness levels in boys generally show a higher degree of tracking over time compared to girls.

    The purpose of this paper is to take up two phenomena i.e. the scaling down of school's size" and the expansion of the school attendance zone (caused by the decreasing birth rate), and to clarify the influence that those phenomena give to "Cooperation between the home, the community and the school." Also, whether or not the school management participation system and school support programs are effective is examined. The results are as follows. 1. The practice of "the policy of Cooperation between the home, the community and the school" is positively implemented in the small-scale school, since it has been recognized that it is effective for the survival of the school, the complement of the educational function and the improvement of school management. 2. The attendance zone's expansion by the combination and reorganization of schools spreads geographic and psychological distance between "the school" and "the home and community", and it makes the activation of the community difficult. 3. The school management participation system has the possibility of stimulating the community activation, if it is installed after combination and reorganization of schools. 4. The obtainment of the volunteers becomes a problem for the school support programs. This problem is mainly observed in the small-scale schools that are in remote places. Only, the school support programs may demonstrate the effect in the school after combination and reorganization.
