For the puropse of the comparison of hearing toxicity between a new antibiotic aminodeoxykanamycin (
AKM) and kanamycin (
KM), the experiments have been carried out using guinea pigs, and the results were obtained as follows.
When the comparison was made between two drugs on hearing toxicity by means of Preyer's auricle reflex,
AKM group exhibited a hearing damage earlier than
KM group following the daily intramuscular injection of 400 mg/kg, the damage progressed more rapidly in
AKM group than in
KM group, whereas little difference was observed between both drugs following the administration of 200 mg/kg.
If
AKM was used clinically, its auditory toxicity could be estimated less than that of
KM, b ecause the clinical dose is only 1/10-1/20 of the present experimental one and clinical dose of
AKM is a half of
KM.
