The paper deals with the relationship between the formation of immunity and the Vitamin C content in the mucous membrane of sinuses, especially the maxillar sinus of chronic sinusitis.
Vitamin C content of the membrane by microscopic examination revealed high vitamin contents in the following descending order; edematous type, mixed type and fibrous type, however, inf iltrative type contained no Vitamin C.
In the mixed type the more remarkable pathological finding was, the higher was the Vitamin C content, and the higher was the titer of the agglutination for suppurative microorganism.
It seemed that the amount of Vitamin C in the connective tissue was related to the titer of the agglutination. In these cases the culture of the secretion of the sinuses grew no or few colonies. It was suggestive that the edema of the membrane was caused mostly by antigen-antibody reaction.
The chronic cases with 3∼4 years duration or more exhibited immunity while the cases with shorter duration had no immunity. Vitamin C was not found in about 5% of the advanced edematous type which had 3∼4 years duration or more, In these cases agglutination tests were negative, and microorganisms were found in the secretion of the sinuses and showed good growth in the culture. The edema in these cases seemed to be caused mostly by disturbance of the blood circulation, and the results of surgical treatment of these cases were not satisfactory.
