Ground and flight experiments, using MLS elevation subsystem, were carried out to obtain diffracted field strength and diffraction angle error caused by hangar top.
This paper describes the experimental method, some experimental results and UTD (Uniform geometrical Theory of Diffraction) analysis.
The measured field strength, at the back of the hangar, shows a typical diffracted field strength pattern. Knife edge model calculations for the field strength coincide with the experimental results.
Remarkable errors are obtained by the angle error measurement. By introducing slope diffraction component with the direct and ordinary diffraction components, calculated angle error results agree well with the measured results.
An analytical method shown here, can be applied to estimation of the field strength and the angle error at the diffracted region on MLS elevation guidance.
