    “青色は世界中で好まれる色である” という主張に端を発し,ひとが思い描く青色は同じ色であるかを探った.小学生から高齢者まで幅広い年齢層にアンケート調査を実施し,得られた386人分のデータを分析した結果,ひとが思い描く青色の代表色は概ね同じであるが,青色の許容範囲は年代で差異があると結論付けた.

    Background and Aims: Recent reports indicate that a variety of light-based devices have been used for acne treatment and skin rejuvenation. A new technology combining intense pulsed light with negative pressure, photopneumatic technology, has recently attracted interest. The present study assessed acne treatment and skin rejuvenation with this novel approach
    Subjects and Methods: Acne, 450 nm tip. Five Japanese volunteers (1 male, 4 female; mean age 28.6 yr; skin type III) with mild to moderate/moderate active acne participated. The face was treated with 2 sessions, 2 weeks apart. Biopsies were obtained immediately after the first session and 1 week after the second session, and routinely processed for transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Rejuvenation, profusion tip with topical preparation. In 5 Japanese volunteers (3 male, 2 female; mean age 37.6 yr, skin type III), the volar aspect of both forearms was treated with the 530 nm head at P6 (around 12 J/cm2). The left arm was then treated with a pre-infused profusion tip and vacuum only. Four sessions were given, 14-day intervals. Biopsies were taken from both arms 2 weeks after the 2nd session and 3 weeks after the 4th session. One-half of each biopsy was assessed with histo- and immunohistochemistry, and the other with TEM.
    Results
    Acne trial: A combination of physical extraction of comedones, mild photothermal damage of the follicle and damage to identified bacilli was noted post-treatment, with macroscopic improvement of the skin. Rejuvenation with profusion: Significant morphological and immunohistochemical differences were seen between the control and profusion-treated arms at the first assessment. These differences became less significant at the 2nd assessment.
    Conclusions
    Macroscopically and histologically, photopneumatic technology improved acne lesions, suggesting a synergistic effect between the components of the technology. In skin rejuvenation, the profusion therapy accelerated the regenerative process, and could have excellent additional potential as a noninvasive transepidermal drug delivery system.

    [Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of radiofrequency (RF), electroacupuncture (EA), and low-level laser therapy (LLLT), which are used in physical therapies, on facial wrinkles and moisture. [Subjects and Methods] A total of 30 female participants aged 30–55 years participated in this study and the results will be used as a reference for further development of skin physical therapy. Thirty adult females were assigned to an LLLT (n=10), EA (n=10), or RF group (n=10). The intervention was performed in two 15-minute sessions per week for six weeks. Subjects’ skin tone and pigmentation were observed before and after the intervention. [Results] Treatment of the under eye area showed that wrinkles were significantly decreased on both sides after RF, EA, and LLLT. Treatment of the eye rims indicated that wrinkles significantly decreased on the right side after RF, EA, and LLLT. [Conclusion] The application of LLLT, EA, and RF had positive effects on wrinkle and moisture content of adult women’s faces.

    [Purpose] In this study, the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT), electroacupuncture (EA), and radiofrequency (RF), which are used in physical therapy, on the pigmentation and skin tone of adult women’s faces were investigated to provide basic data for skin interventions. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty adult females were assigned to either an LLLT group (n=10), an EA group (n=10), or an RF group (n=10). The intervention was performed in two 15-minute sessions per week for six weeks. Subjects’ skin tone and pigmentation were observed before and after the intervention. [Results] The EA group showed significant reductions in pigmentation in the left and right eye rims, as well as in the left cheek. The RF group showed significant post-intervention reductions in pigmentation under the left eye, as well as in the left and right eye rims and the left cheek. The LLLT group showed significant increases in skin tone in the forehead and both eye rims. The RF group showed significant increases in skin tone under both eyes. [Conclusion] The application of LLLT, EA, and RF had positive effects on pigmentation and skin tone of adult women’s faces.

    Background: Aggressive, or even minimally aggressive, aesthetic interventions are almost inevitably followed by such events as discomfort, erythema, edema and hematoma formation which could lengthen patient downtime and represent a major problem to the surgeon. Recently, low level light therapy with light-emitting diodes (LED-LLLT) at 830 nm has attracted attention in wound healing indications for its anti-inflammatory effects and control of erythema, edema and bruising.
    Rationale: The wavelength of 830 nm offers deep penetration into living biological tissue, including bone. A new-generation of 830 nm LEDs, based on those developed in the NASA Space Medicine Laboratory, has enabled the construction of planar array-based LED-LLLT systems with clinically useful irradiances. Irradiation with 830 nm energy has been shown in vitro and in vivo to increase the action potential of epidermal and dermal cells significantly. The response of the inflammatory stage cells is enhanced both in terms of function and trophic factor release, and fibroblasts demonstrate superior collagenesis and elastinogenesis.
    Conclusions: A growing body of clinical evidence is showing that applying 830 nm LED-LLLT as soon as possible post-procedure, both invasive and noninvasive, successfully hastens the resolution of sequelae associated with patient downtime in addition to significantly speeding up fran wound healing. This article reviews that evidence, and attempts to show that 830 nm LED-LLLT delivers swift resolution of postoperative sequelae, minimizes downtime and enhances patient satisfaction

    Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) are important cells which coordinate gastrointestinal motility. ICC express Kit receptor tyrosine kinase, and Kit immunohistochemistry reveals ICC morphology and distribution in the gastrointestinal musculature. ICC show a highly branched morphology and form unique networks. Myenteric ICC (ICC-MY) are located at the layer of the myenteric plexus and serve as electrical pacemakers. Intramuscular ICC (ICC-IM) and ICC in the deep muscular plexus (ICC-DMP) are distributed within the muscular layers, and are densely innervated by excitatory and inhibitory enteric motor neurons and in close contact with nerve terminals. Recent studies combined with morphological and functional techniques directly revealed that ICC-IM and ICC-DMP are mediators of enteric motor neurotransmission. These types of ICC express several receptors for neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine and substance P and show responses to excitatory nerve stimulations. ICC also express receptive mechanisms for nitric oxide, which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the gastrointestinal tract. They can respond to nitrergic nerve stimulation by cyclic GMP production. Kit mutant mice lack ICC-IM and show attenuated postsynaptic responses after intrinsic nerve stimulation. These findings indicate the importance for ICC in neurotransmission in the gastrointestinal tract.

    Tetrameric, NADP-containing glucose-fructose oxidoreductase (GFOR) from Zymomonas mobilis catalyzes the oxidation of glucose into glucono-δ-lactone coupled to the reduction of fructose to sorbitol. GFOR is inactivated during substrate turnover in vitro, the long-term stability of the enzyme during conversions in biochemical reactors thereby being drastically reduced. The process of inactivation is triggered by structural transitions that are induced by the lactone product and involves aggregation as the ultimate cause of irreversible inactivation. Guanidinium hydrochloride-induced changes in the conformation of GFOR seem to be similar to those observed in the presence of lactone, and are manifested by incubation time-dependent increases in protein fluorescence and the solventexposed hydrophobic surface. The formation of high-order protein associates in solution in the presence of this denaturant proceeds from the native tetramer to a reversibly inactivated octamer and then to a dodecameric form that cannot be reactivated through spontaneous or assisted refolding. Therefore, stabilization of GFOR during turnover requires that the marked tendency of the enzyme to form aggregates is prevented efficiently. This goal has been accomplished in the presence of low urea concentrations (1.0M), which led to a 10-fold increase in the half-life of GFOR under operational conditions.

      This essay focuses on a working-class woman, called Hannah Cullwick (1833-1901), and studies her ideas of fashion based on her diary. Hannah was a maid-of-all work since she was fourteen. In spite of her humble origin, she kept a diary between 1854 and 1873, because her secret lover, Arthur Munby (1828-1910), recommended her to do so. Munby was an upper-class author and poet to whom Hannah had a life-long relation. In her diary, she recorded her opinions of her works, numerous employers she served, her colleagues, and Munby. Her diary reveals that through her relation to Munby, Hannah cultivated her own ideas of gender, career and fashion.

      Throughout her service, she wore a humble working-dress. Even after her secret marriage to Munby in 1873, which financially enabled her to dress and behave like a lady, she determinedly wore the humble clothes of a lower servant. She self-approvingly noted her financial and mental independence through domestic service, while she pitied 'proudly' dressed middle-class ladies who engaged only feminine activities. Experiencing different social class behaviours and gender ideologies, Hannah found her humble working dress of cotton functioning as a sign of her financial and mental independence, pride of her service, and her identity as a working-class 'woman'. These ideas were definitely different from middle-class stereotypical assumptions of working-class women, or working-class women's standard reactions against them.

      Hannah's life-long relation to the upper-class man may not be a typical experience for a lower-class woman of the period. Unique her experiences and ideas may be, Hannah provides us a new understanding of women in this social segment, their career and gender identity through their dress.

    The INHAND (International Harmonization of Nomenclature and Diagnostic Criteria for Lesions Project (www.toxpath.org/inhand.asp) is a joint initiative of the Societies of Toxicologic Pathology from Europe (ESTP), Great Britain (BSTP), Japan (JSTP) and North America (STP) to develop an internationally accepted nomenclature for proliferative and nonproliferative lesions in laboratory animals. The purpose of this publication is to provide a standardized nomenclature for classifying microscopic lesions observed in most tissues and organs from the nonhuman primate used in nonclinical safety studies. Some of the lesions are illustrated by color photomicrographs. The standardized nomenclature presented in this document is also available electronically on the internet (http://www.goreni.org/). Sources of material included histopathology databases from government, academia, and industrial laboratories throughout the world. Content includes spontaneous lesions as well as lesions induced by exposure to test materials. Relevant infectious and parasitic lesions are included as well. A widely accepted and utilized international harmonization of nomenclature for lesions in laboratory animals will provide a common language among regulatory and scientific research organizations in different countries and increase and enrich international exchanges of information among toxicologists and pathologists.
