Clinico-statistical observation on 103 patients with malignant tumors in oral and maxillofacial regions treated in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Tokyo Women's Medical College Hospital from January 1980 to December 1990 was presented.
Of the 103 patients, 62 were male and 41 were female (1.5: 1). The mean age was 59.1 years.
The sited primary tumors were 47 cases on the tongue, 16 cases on the gingiva, 10 cases on the maxillary sinus, and so on.
97 cases (94.2%) were pathologically diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma. The others were 4 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma, 3 cases of malignant lymphoma and so on.
According to the TNM classification by UICC (1987), 94 cases oral of carcinoma involving maxillary sinus were classfied as 16 cases (17.0%) of T1, 47 cases (50.0%) of T2, 14 cases (14.9%) of T3, 17 cases (18.1%) of T4. In the N classification, cervical lymph nodal metastasis was found in 23 cases (24.5%). In stage grouping, 16 cases (17.0%) were in stage I, 35 cases (37.2%) in stage II, 20 cases (21.3%) in stage III, and 23 cases (24.5%) in stage IV.
The 5-year cumulative survival rate was 61.4%.
