Phosphatase acitivities were measured in core samples and chimneys sampled in deep-sea hydrothermal systems in Suiyo Seamount in the Izu-Bonin Arc and in South Mariana, as part of the Archaean Park Project. p-Nitrophenyl phosphate was used as a substrate for acid and alkaline phosphatase assay. Significant phosphatase activity was deteted in some of the deep core samples and outer/medium part of chimney samples, while only backgraound level of activity was detected in surface core samples and inner part of chimney samples. The present results strongly suggest the presence of subterranean biosphere in the submarine hydrothermal systems. Phosphatase activity is shown to be a good biomarker for living microbial activities in environments.

We clarify the chemical and isotopic compositions of methane and carbon dioxide in hydrothermal fluids from the Mariana Trough. On Pika site, carbon isotope ratio of methane in the sample is lighter than the supposed mixing line between hydrothermal fluids and seawater. On Fryer site, that is heavier than the mixing line. These results suggest that the methane is affected by microbial activity. On Archaean site, the isotope ratio is lighter than the samples from the other sites, suggesting equilibrium reacion of carbon isotope was quenching at lower temperature.

Geochemistry of dissovled organic carbon in hydrothermal fluid emitted from seafloor hydrothermal vents has not been well understood. We report the result of DOC in the hydrothermal fluid samples recovered from sediment-starved hydrothermal systems, which are located on mid-ocean ridge and island-arc.

Along south Mariana backarc spreading center, some active hydrothermal fields have been located. Geochemical studies revealed following characteristics of the hydrothermal fluids. High-temperature fluid from Pika Site at the off-ridge seamount showed chemistry close similar to those in mid-oceanic ridge. High-temperature fluid from Archaean site at the ridge skirt showed rather K-rich trend, which may reflect petrology of the spreading center. Low-temperature fluid from Fryer site within the spreading axis are explained by mixing between seawater and the hydrothermal endmember. Clear difference from this trend in H2S concentration could be evidence for microbiological consumption beneath the seafloor.

We report an oxygen isotope analytical system for rocks and minerals using a
CO2 laser-
Br
F5 fluorination technique that has been built at the
Institute for
Study of the
Earth's
Interior,
Okayama
University at
Misasa,
Japan.
The system is basically for bulk rock d17
O and d18
O analysis using a few mg of silicate and oxide samples, and is applicable for oxygen 3 isotope mapping of meteorites.

In order to analyze the oxygen isotopic ratios of minerals in chondrules and CAIs of meteorites, the UV laser ablation continuous flow oxygen isitope ratio mass spectrometry has been developed. The spatial resolution is 20 micron, and the analytical precision of oxygen isotope ratios are within 0.5 permil if the sample size is 50-60 nanomol.

We had constructed a new equipment to make fulleren under various gas atmosphere. We will make fullerene under noble gas atmosphere, and make isotope analyses of noble gas isotopes fractionation. This time, we will actually make fullerene using this equipment, and report the preliminary result including carbon isotope at the fulleren formation.

It has recently become clear that many of the non-magnetic silicate crystals have the potential of causing magnetic alignment when the crystals contain finite amount of paramagnetic impurity ions. The conditions for estimating the structure of cosmic magnetic field are discussed, based on the observed elemental abundances of circumstellar dust.

Some practical aspects investigate for an on-line Cr reduction technique for measurement of D/H variations of natural waters using a conventional isotope ratio mass spectrometer. This method was introduced as a rapid and precise technique in Gehle et al, (1996) and Donnely et al, (2001). In 2003, we install this system which attached to a VG SIRA10 mass spectrometer at the Institute for Study of the Earth's Interior, Okayama University. In this report, we refer the configuration of reduction system, reproducibility, memory efect, and optimum analytic procedure to attest availability of this method.
