We cultured human mesenchymal stem cells in osteogenic differentiation medium for 2 weeks, and conducted its gene profiling by DNA microarray. 1368 genes were down-regulated, but 2516 genes were up-regulated. Characteristically, osteogenic-differentiation-related genes such as those of osteonectin, osteopontin, BSP and BMP10 and collagen type 1 and 4 genes were up-regulated, while Cyclin A2 gene was down-regulated. Many genes were identified, but their function is not well known. Future studies are highly expected.

The end-carboxylic acid carbon nanotube (CNT) was obtained by using a strong acid treatment. The CNT/alginate nanocomposite gel was prepared to develop a tissue engineering scaffold. The CNT/alginate gel has advantages in higher gelation rate and the strength. Preliminary studies on investigation the gel-forming condition and several mechanical properties of CNT/alginate gel should be discussed.

We reported previously that concentrated acids had great effects on the surface topography of cp titanium. Especially, the etching in concentrated sulfuric acid was the most adequate surface modification for cp Ti. In the present study,we applied this etching to the pretreatment for veneering of crown and bridge resins.

A light-cured soft lining material and its using method are newly designed. A light-cured soft lining material is made from an urethanemethacrylate oligomer, and that is painted on a casts plaster model and light-cured before filling the dough of denture base resin. In this study, we determined the mechanical properties of a light-cured soft lining material made from a urethane oligomer.

Fine ordered structures occurring in a phase separation process of the solution of gelatin (natural biopolymer) and poly(ethylene glycol) (synthetic polymer) were observed by an optical microscope. Methods to quantitatively analyze the degree of orderliness in the observed structures using a Fourier transform technique were developed. Such ordered morphologies as network or porous structures made by biocompatible polymers should lead to biodegradable custom-made scaffolds for the dental tissue engineering.

Considering the safety of the ozone, we consider the method using the low concentration ozone, and miniature cold cathode discharge tube (ultraviolet lamp) and inverter of argon-mercury of various shapes are produced experimentally, and research and development of the instrument is carried out. However, in the European standard the mercury changes to use prohibition from July, 2006, argon-mercury can not be used. Therefore, ozone evolution ultraviolet lamp which do not use the mercury are urgently necessary. It is reported, this study because the examination was carried out, by producing the lamp of various excimer gas experimentally in order to develop excimer lamp which does not use the mercury.

It is understood that the soldering of the finger-like spring to the main arch wire in a flame results in the decrease in the elastic limit of the elastic wire. However, application of the laser-welding prevent from the decrease in the elasticity of the wire. In this study, that the effects of the irradiation power and angle of the laser beam on the welding strength were examined.
