Effect of ultra-thin SiOx layer on epitaxial growth of YSZ film on Si(001) wafer has been considered. The SiOx layer thinner than 2nm has weak crystallinity. YSZ film can epitaxially grow on Si wafer with SiOx layer. It has been clarified, using high temperature cross-sectional TEM method, that crystallization of YSZ layer introduces strain in the Si surface region, and that the SiOx layer thicker than 1nm can relax the crystallization strain around the interface. Thus, the SiOx layer with the thickness about 1-2nm has two effects of transmission of epitaxy and strain relaxation in YSZ/SiOx/Si(001) system. Dopant- and structural- modification of YSZ buffer layer has been effective to prevent the growth of SiOx layer, and to improve C-V characteristics.

Electrical field induced diffusion of oxygen vacancies in epitaxiall YSZ prepared pulsed laser deposition was investigated. The activation energy of electrical field induced diffusion of oxygen vacancies in YSZ thin film was estimated at 0.3eV. The results indicate that oxygen ions in YSZ film diffuse to the Al electrode during electrical field application. Electrical field induced diffusion of oxygen vacancies and hysteresis in C-V curve were not observed in Nb doped of YSZ films indicating Nb doping decreases the oxygen vacancy diffusion.

A highly protective amorphous aluminum silicate layer on the SUS pipe surface was formed after granite-dry steam interaction in the presence of copper. Mass transfer of silicon and aluminum was interpreted in terms of the stability of granite in the dry steam. In this paper, experiments of adjusting dry steam pH, reactions on the surface of granite particle and mirror surface of granite block were conducted, and its samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX).

Electroluminescence from ZnO thin film including small amount of Er ions was investigated. The sample construction was ITO / fluorescent film / ITO / SiO
2 glass substrate. Only infrared light emission (1.3 – 1.6 micron) was observed when applying suitable electric field, however, it was extremely unstable. Change of electronic state of ZnO by doping Er ions might be related to the electroluminescence characteristics.

Al2O3-SiO2 glasses doped with 5wt% Eu2O3 were fabricated by rapid melt-quenching method using an infrared image furnace and twin roller. The obtained glasses contained a large amount of Eu2+ ions. The fractions of Eu2+ ions in the glasses were estimated by X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, to be f = 32.5% and 20.7% for Al2O3 content of 10 and 40 mol%, respectively. It was found that as Al2O3 content was increased the fraction was decreased, indicated that when occupied volume of MOx (M=Si, Al) for lower Al2O3 content was increased more Eu2+ ions were produced. In luminescence spectra a blue emission due to f-d transitions of Eu2+ was dominated even for f = 20~30%.

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effect of body and glaze composition on the mechanical properties of porcelain strengthened by addition of 15mass% of corundum fine powder and by crystallization of cristobalite. With the increase in amount of cristobalite, thermal expansion coefficient of bodies increased. Control of cristobalite in body proper for glaze to generate moderate compressive stress enabled to improve the bending strength of porcelain up to 240 MPa. Excess compressive stress in glaze caused by much difference in thermal expansion coefficient had to be avoided, because it led to crazing in glaze. With an observation of fracture origins by SEM and measurement of elastic moduli, stress in glaze and strain of glaze were calculated, and the fracture criterions were theoretically considered in a view point of fracture origins.
