We investigated the effect of the addition of K
2O on self-cleaning property of titanophosphate glasses. It was found that 18K50TP glass exhibited the photo-induced hydrophilicity in a shorter heat-treating time than 70TP glass. The chemical etching of 70TP glass also induced the photo-induced hydrophilicity.

Kinetic analysis was carried out on the nitridation of Ga2O3 powder by NH3. Weight changes due to the reaction were monitored by thermogravimetry at 800, 900, and 1000 degree C. The product phases were determined by XRD, and microstructure of the products observed by SEM. Weight loss of the Ga2O3 powder started at 700 degree C and severely occurred at 1140 degree C. GaN and metal Ga were formed in the sample heated up to 1200 degree C. Isothermal nitridation at 800 degree C to 1000 degree C showed that the reacted fraction (alfa) from Ga2O3 to GaN was linearly increased against the time in the range of alfa from 0.2 to 0.8.

Transparent YAG can be used as a host materials for solid state laser. We made completely transparent YAG ceramics using active powder. The optical and mechanical properties were very sensitive sensitive to point defects in YAG ceramics. We are studying on the relation between the properties and point defects, using oxygen diffusion data taken with SIMS. In this presentation we will report the doping-effect on oxygen diffusivity in several YAG ceramics. We will discuss the oxygen defect structure in the transparent YAG ceramics.

Surface modification of 3DOM silica matrix by -SO
3H or -PO
3H
2 was conducted to improve the proton conductivity of composite membranes. In both cases, enhancement of the conductivity was observed when the filling polymer (AMPS-HMA mixed gel) included more than 30 mol% of AMPS. This result suggests that a certain density of sulfonic acid groups is necessary in the filling polymer to form proton conduction pathways at the interface between the modified silica and filling polymer interface. In addition, the surface modification effectively reduced the contact resistance between the composite membrane and catalyst layer, resulting in improvement of cell performance.

Ga and Y co-doped BaZrO3 perovskite type proton conductors were fabricated by solid state reaction method to reveal contributions of Ga additive toward sintering properties and grain boundary conductivity. A lattice parameter a showed dependence to Ga concentration. It showed maximum value at 1mol% Ga. That of 1mol% Ga and 14mol% Y doped BaZrO3 was 4.215Å which was close to that of 15mol% Y-doped BaZrO3 sintered at 1800oC. It decreased as increases of Ga concentration up to 5mol%.

At present, fuel cell technology is being investigated for its potential use in transport and power generation applications around the world. Fuel cells have the capacity to replace various conventional technologies with cleaner and more efficient systems. Multikilowatts of solid oxide fuel cells have been operated and have shown excellent performance at present. The commercialization of fuel cells is being fostered by various trends currently impacting the marketplace, such as the deregulation of the electric utility industry, and the increasing desire on the part of utilities to avoid costly transmission, maintenance and distribution expenditures. This paper aims to demonstrate the component materials and design for tubular solid oxide fuel cell, which has been successfully fabricated and tested.

Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) Ni-YSZ anode was fabricated for lowering the polarization resistance of solid oxide fuel cell. In addition, SDC coating on the electrode surface was conducted to improve the SOFC with 3DOM anode. In this study, the relationship between the cell performance and SDC filling ratio was investigated in detail.

A Gd-doped ceria powder (GDC, Ce
0.8Gd
0.2O
1.9) prepared from an oxalate precursor was hot-pressed at 1173-1273 K in Ar atmosphere and annealed in air at 1273-1473 K to control the bulk density and grain size. Complex impedance of GDC of the microstructures of 0.29-5.6 μm average grain size and 95-98 % theoretical density were measured at 573-1073 K in air in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 2 MHz. The bulk conductivity (σ
i(b)) was independent of the grain size and the activation energy for the migration of oxide ions was 85-88 kJ/mol. The grain boundary conductivity (σ
i(g)) was far small as compared with bulk conductivity σ
i(b) (σ
i(g) = 1/40-1/700 of σ
i(b) at 573 K). The σ
i(g) was influenced by the average grain size and showed a minimum value at around 3 μm and gradually increased with decreasing grain size. However, the total conductivity decreased for smaller grain size because of the increased thickness of grain boundary of relatively low conductivity. The information of diffusion of oxide ions from the surface into GDC inside was also reported.

Mullite powder or the mixture of alumina and silica powder was used as the raw materials, and 0-15wt% of Mg-Al spinel powder was added to the raw materials. The powder containing spinel was pressureless-sintered at 1200-1650
oC in air, and its sintering behavior and microstructural change with sintering temperature were investigated. Whereas open porosity of mullite ceramics without spinel addition was less than 5% at a sintering temperature of 1650
oC, mullite ceramics with spinel could be densified at 1500
oC. Open porosity of the pellet using Al
2O
3-SiO
2 mixture and mullite powder as the raw materials significantly decreased around 1450
oC and 1300
oC, respectively.

The conditions for the fabrication of high-density silicon carbide (SiC) composite with vapor-grown carbon fiber addition, i.e., carbon nanofiber (VGCF) and carbon nanotube (CNT), were investigated by hot-pressing and pulse current pressure sintering (PCPS) techniques, using the sintering aids (Al4C3 and B4C). The relative density and fracture toughness of SiC composites with 6 mass% VGCF addition (sintering aid: 8 mass% Al4C3 and 2 mass% B4C) hot-pressed at 1800 degree C for 1 h (pressure: 62 MPa) were 96.3% and 5.2 MPa m-1/2, respectively. Similar results were obtained when the CNT was added to the SiC, instead of VGCF. Owing to the firing by PCPS at 1750 degree C for 1 h , the relative density and fracture toughness of SiC composite with VGCF addition further increased to 98.9% and 5.5 MPa m-1/2, respectively.

The SiC nanowires were obtained on the mullite boat after heating up at 1350
oC through a simple thermal evaporation of silicon nanopowders among decomposition of CH
4 gas without catalysts. The nanowires were identified as single crystalline b-phase SiC. The length and diameter of the nanowires are generally several tens micron and 20-50 nm, respectively.

Novel approach to ordered siloxane–organic hybrids by self-assembly of designed precursors is reported. Alkoxysilanes and chlorosilanes with covalently attached hydrophobic organic tails are hydrolyzed to form amphiphilic molecules containing silanol groups, leading to the formation of layered hybrids. The design of molecules having alkyl chains and large oligosiloxane heads led to the formation of mesophases consisting of cylindrical assemblies, providing a direct pathway to ordered porous silica. The synthesis, structural features, and formation processes of these hybrid mesostructures are presented.

2O
(1) in the solid- and liquid-states were studied in detail. FT-IR, solid-state NMR, and TG/DTA-MS analyses confirmed that the crystalline solid of 1 was stable under its melting point but was decomposed via cleavage of Si-O-Si linkages at higher temperature (~150 °C). When
1 was dissolved and stirred in an acidic solution, the partial cleavage of Si-O-Si linkages occurred, while Si-OH groups and Si-OtBu groups remained intact. Furthermore, silylation of
