The purpose of this paper is to evaluate improvement of living environment in K-district of Kitakyushu city from the view point of the environmental transition and the transformation of the vernacular living values which are respected as the residents' honour and fascination of the district. Road system, planned and improved by the city authority, contributes the escalation of the physical values and the vanity of the traditional living culture on the alley. Physical environments had been improved greatly, but vernacular living values had been tended to decline through the improvement because they are in trade-off relation. Therefore it is necessary for improvement of living environment to has "environmental education for residents" and "Resident's autonomous creation of the living environments".
