This paper aimed to prove that there had been affirmative descriptions about the plainness of Ise Shrine before modernism of architecture came into Japan, through the investigation of Japanese literatures of architecture history, fine arts history, and Shinto history between 1890s and 1920s. As a result, the following facts were found in these literatures. 1. Words such as "plainness" were used. 2. The form of Ise Shrine was praised. Therefore, it was ascertained that some historians had evaluated the plainness of Ise Shrine affirmatively before modernism came into Japan.
