The Ueno Museum (the National Museum) in Tokyo was designed by J. Conder (Professor at the Imperial College of Engineering) and completed in 1882. This building was well-known as Conder's early works in Japan. This study intends to investigate Conder's planning and the progress of the construction and the peculiarity of design or structure in this building on the basis of the plans and the archives preserved in the Tokyo National Museum and the Prime Minister's Office. In the present paper, the progress of the planning and the construction, the engineers in charge, the expenses of the construction etc. are described.
