This study aims to derive a new formulation of aseismic design by introducing the concept of maximizing the degree of satisfaction. In this purpose, it is known that fuzzy mathematical programming is very useful. In general, fuzzy mathematical programming problems require the usual optimal design procedure as subsystems. For this procedure, the so-called dynamic optimality criterion method is utilized, which was proposed to have good convergency and less computation time. Some design of framed structure are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and applicability of the design method developed herein. Through this study, the following conclusions were derived. The use of fuzzy sets makes it possible to account for the uncertainties due to the approximation in modeling or the simplification of design process, which can be scarcely treated by probability theory. The measure of satisfaction developed herein is available to choose a representative value for each design parameter. Fuzzy mathematical programming provides a useful tool to determine the rational values of design parameters from the standpoint of optimum aseismic design.
