As intumescent coating has lower level of insulation than ordinary protective materials, we have already reported that a period of fire resistance not less than one hour was obtained by using Fire Resistant steel which has a higher strength at high temperatures. As the actual steel sections used for multi-stroy buildings are usually heavier than that of the sections used in standard fire tests, the steel temperature is relatively low because of their heat capacities. This paper presents experimental results of the heat test of steel members coated by an intumescent coating with various heat capacities. By simulating the measured steel temperatures, design diagrams for determining the coating thickness were obtained.
