Inappropriate reinforcing methods for openings at beam-end regions could cause brittle fracture of beams in reinforced concrete condominiums subjected to earthquakes. Therefore, the openings are arranged outside beam-end regions. Consequently, large drop ceilings for storing the pipes are required constraining living space. To solve this problem, a reinforcing method for openings was developed, and the performance of beams with such openings was examined by loading tests. These tests proved that the developed reinforcing method has the necessary strength and deformability guaranteed by the design. In addition, the full- scale construction experimental result showed that there is no problem in workability of installation of reinforcement and placing of concrete in the vicinity of openings.
