On-site investigation and interviews to residents are conducted on a fire in an apartment building which resulted in the notable fire and smoke damage throughout the building not lower than the floor of the fire initiation. The extensive smoke damage is attributed to the failure of the closure of the fire doors of the staircase, probably due to the aging of either the fire detecting fuses or the automatic door closers. Unawareness of the gang-ways by the evacuees resulted in the notable difficulties in the evacuation from numbers of the dwelling units.
