Akita Prefecture, northern Japan, have more than ten large damaging earthquakes during the recent 120 years and the authors made literature surveys on major events. In this paper, the 1970 Southeastern Akita earthquake (M=6.2) was investigated. This local earthquake occurred at the boundary between Iwate prefecture and caused 6 injuries and damages to houses and infrastructures were reported. Through the literature surveys on reconnaissance reports and newspapers in both prefectures, detailed damages were clarified. We believe that the experience of this event can be utilized to future disaster prevention for not only this area but also the other areas.
