A large proportion of energy consumption in Japan is attributable to houses, and the influence of household appliances is not negligible. We have surveyed actual conditions of appliance usage in recently-built houses in the Kanto region. It was confirmed that appliance usage varied widely depending on residential characteristics. In some houses, electric heaters are used every day for room heating or clothes drying. It indicates the necessity of modification of appliance usage for reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
