This research aimed to establish a method for calculating the compression strength of full-culm bamboo columns. We conducted buckling tests and numerical analyses using small-scale specimens of Phyllostachys edulis, Phyllostachys bambusoides, and compared them. The buckling load of full-culm bamboo columns can be estimated with sufficient accuracy through FEM linear buckling analysis, by appropriately evaluating the culm geometry and the bending Young’s modulus. However, for both species, the bending Young’s modulus is thought to be affected by factors such as cross-sectional size, moisture content, and specific gravity, suggesting a necessity to formalize the relationships between these physical properties.
