This report clarified the rights and uses of riverbanks (east side of street) along Kami-Ōkawamae-Dōri in the port town Niigata early in the Meiji era by analyzing old documents, and an old photograph. In 1869, on riverbanks along Kami-Ōkawamae-Dōri, timber was piled up, and storehouses and ancillary buildings were built, besides, “96 mon” was paid per tsubo on the riverbanks, and “chikenjou” was issued by the town official. In 1873, the riverbanks were included in the site on the west side of Kami-Ōkawamae-Dōri. In 1886, large storehouses were lined up along Kami-Ōkawamae-Dōri on the riverbanks (from Ichibancho to Rokubancho).
