European yield theory is a method of calculating a joint strength using several characteristic values, and the method for determining these characteristic values must be clear and appropriate. In Japan, a method for determining characteristic values has been defined for small screws, but no such standard exists for self-tapping screws. The purpose of this study is to investigate and gain knowledge on how to determine the effective diameter of self-tapping screws.
