Using the Dalian Foreign Language Institute, this paper studies students whom aimed to do overseas study in Japan in the 1980s, sponsored by the college-preparatory education of the Chinese government. Available college-preparatory education course information and curricula from Dalian Foreign Language Institute were reviewed. These were divided into three stages of a half year education program. Stage one: learning Japanese with Chinese teachers. Stage two: learning Japanese with both Chinese and Japanese teachers. Stage three: learning science and technology courses with Japanese teachers. The project relied on the joint efforts of Chinese and Japanese teachers who were forced to solve many new problems together. Teaching difficulties were, for example, helped by the compilation of a Chinese-Japanese-English trilingual dictionary. Students who participated in the preparatory course highly appreciated it, and believed that it played an important role in their later studies in Japan.
