After injecting the cardinal nutritional elements (sugar, protein and fat) into the abdominal cavities of rats, the author has histologically studied the fat in liver cells and obtained the following data.
In the case of sugar (50% glucose solution) the fat increased markedly in less than ten minutes and reached a maximum in half an hour. Then it decreased to the level as before injection. In the case of protein (caseindigest) similar effect was seen.
In the case of fat (yanol) there was a slower effect, beginning to increase after the first hour. But the degree of increase remained medium and no increase could be seen after that.
There was no difference in morphological changes of fat granules between “non-intestinal” and “intestinal” administration of the three nutrition elements. But the appearance was markedly earlier in the former case compared with the latter.
However, even in the experimental case of physiological salt solution injection, conducted as control, fat granules appeared in large quantities half an hour afterwards. In view of the preceding fact, the author suspects that the fat in the cases of glucose solution and caseindigest is merely due to the movement of fat in the body and the increase in the case of yanol is probably owing to the fat injected.
