Streptomycin, which is said to inhibit fermentation was used as a method to investigate how mitochondria participates in the function of the liver cells enzymic and morphologically. And the results of the study was as follows:
When a large amount of streptomycin was injected during fasting an intoxifying change appeared among the liver cells. And mitochondria would gather to form groups or scatter into small specks which later gathered and united to become a dark shadowed cell.
When streptomycin was injected at the time or three hours later of feeding an artificial fundamental diet of three main nutriments the appearance of lipide was delayed and decreased, and the increase of glycogen was stopped in a short period and remained in the liver cells. On the other hand, granulation of mitochondria was weakened, and the change of their original form was prolonged. These facts show that streptomycin inhibits the synthesis of lipides and the composition and decomposition of glycogen. In parallel to this, the movement of mitochondria was inhibited. When pig fat was given lipide in the liver was formed from the granulated mitochondria, but when streptomycin was injected at the same time, the amount of lipides in the cell was very small and the change of mitochondria was poor.
From the facts, streptomycin inhibits the morphological change of mitochondria and from the minute observation of the fine cell structure, it was found that the synthesis of lipides and the composition and decomposition of glycogen were also inhibited.
