Biosystems such as cells, organs, and organelles control their condition in response to various environmental stimuli autonomously. This autonomous function of biosystems owes to nonlinear autonomous oscillation, e.g., pacemaker neurons control the central nervous system, and sino-atrial node controls heartbeats. We have developed and reported the function of a molecular recognition ion gating membrane, which can control both pressure driven-flux and osmotic pressure-driven flux in response to specific ion signal like the ion channel of biomembrane. In the present study, we will report the nonlinear autonomous oscillation of osmotic pressure using the molecular recognition ion gating membrane. The gating membrane opened and closed its pores autonomously and cyclically in response to Ba2+ under BaCl2 concentration gradient. Synchronized with opening and closing of the pores, the direction of flow changed between osmotic pressure-driven flow and hydrostatic pressure-driven flow alternatively. Using these phenomena, we can design and develop the novel chemical processes such as separation, drug delivery system, micro fluid device like protein chip, and micro reactor to mimic cells in biosystem.
