The occurrence of deformity of the inter-nostril epidermis was examined in five species of artificially raised juveniles of righteye flounders. The marbled sole (Pleuronectes yokohamae) contained 1.6, 2.5 and 64.8% specimens with deformed nostrils in three fisheries farming centers. The spotted halibut (Verasper variegatus) included 45.1, 72.8 and 89.1% with deformed nostrils, respectively. The willowy flounder (Tanakius kitaharae) had 56.6% with deformed nostrils. No deformities were detected in either the stone flounder (Kareius bicoloratus) or the barfin flounder (V. moseri). In the spotted halibut, the deformity of the inter-nostril epidermis can be used as an artificial tag in release-recapture experiments.
