This study examines the values of viewing contemporary art based on the post-visit questionnaire given to Japanese university students. In 2007, twenty-six students visited Venice Biennale, Documenta and sculpture projects Muenster. For the first time in ten years, the three exhibits were held at the same time. The conclusion is that viewing contemporary art has value even if the viewers do not understand it. Contemporary art of the modernism era consists of a series of images that criticize earlier art and many examples are not suitable for children to see. However, contemporary art of the postmodern era is not necessarily critical. There are many works that highlight links to other fields and send positive messages for life. Supported by this study, it is expected that the appreciation of contemporary postmodern art should play a more important role than it does now in general art classes before the university level.
