Shigeo Wakita, a former researcher at the Ancient Orient Museum, passed away on August 10, 2022. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and all those close to him. Wakita is best remembered for leading the excavation at Tell Mastuma in northwestern Syria. His work clarified building structures and urban planning at the Iron Age settlement and revealed Achaemenid period occupation associated with pits in the hilltop’s southern section. He en- sured the findings were accessible through published reports, a permanent display at a local Syrian museum, and a special exhibition in Japan. Beyond research, Wakita was passionate about education. He utilized the excavation site as a training ground for young researchers and archaeology students, and through his strong ties with the local community, set up accommodation that served as a valuable base for them. His dedication, warmth, and mentorship left a deep impact. He will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of working with him.
