The effect of the host-specific phytotoxins, AM-toxins, on the photosynthetic activity of leaves from susceptible apple cultivars was investigated by using an oxygen electrode. The photosynthetic O₂ evolution was inhibited by AM-toxin I in a host-specific manner. The inhibitory activity of several AM-toxin analogs against photosynthesis was also evaluated and the findings were correlated with their necrosis-inducing activity.
