Sclerothionine (STH) was shown to have a stimulatory effect on growth of rice seedlings, though ergothioneine tested simultaneously had rather an inhibitory effect. With reference to the effect, there was found a difference in the formation between phospholipase A (phosphatide acyl-hydrolase EC 3.1.1.4.) and D (phosphatidylcholine phosphatidohydrolase EC 3.1.4.4.) in seedlings: i. e., STH specifically stimulated the formation of phospholipase D alone, respressing that of phospholipase A, and ergothioneine at first also repressed the formation of phospholipase A, but afterwards, rather stimulated the formation of both phospholipase A and D. Activity ratio of phospholipase D to A seemed to have a relation with the growth or rice seedlings in a later period. In the shaking experiment with a washed mycelium of Sclerotinia libertiana, it was revealed that STH remarkably increased the phospholipid content in mycelium, while ergothioneine had no effect. In this case, STH also repressed the increasing of phospholipase A. STH was thus suggested to influence the phospholipid metabolism in plant by regulating the level of phospholipase A and D.
