Levels of hydroxyl radicals were measured by the methanesulfinic acid (MSA) formed from dimethyl sulfoxide in winter wheat stems treated at a critical low temperature. The level of MSA reached more than 0. 3 μmol per g fresh weight upon incubation at - 20°C. These results suggest the formation of hydroxyl radicals cause the death of plants.
