In recent years, gymnastics has seen a notable increase in the use of a technique where a twists while executing a somersault.

As gymnasts continue to develop the twisted-somersault, it has become apparent that it involves a movement that is different from previous somersault techniques.

The difference lies in the fact that, when executing these twisted-somersaults, the gymnast rotates the body from a position where the head, or the feet, deviation from plane of movement.

In this paper, this technique will be termed a “Somersault with slanted of plane of movement” and a structural analysis will be carried out in order to better understand its potential issues.

This study conducts a comparative analysis between the “front twisted-somersault” and “Butterfly”.

As a result, the following has been clarified:

・ When somersaults are performed with the longitudinal body axis at a 45° angle, the plane of movement exhibits motion that is intermediate between the vertical plane and the hori zontal plane. Furthermore, when the longitudinal body axis is at an angle of 90°, the movement becomes similar to a horizontal Kehr swing.

・ Although “front twisted-somersault” and “Butterfly (with legs together) ” are, on the whole, extremely similar forms of movement, they can be differentiated by the presence or absence of a twist.

・ The intermediate movement between “front twisted-somersault” and “Butterfly (with legs together)” includes movements where the planes are perpendicular to each other. This motion is less than a complete rotation of somersaults, and is also half a twist less than a normal“twisted-somersaults”.
