Eduard Hanslick is widely known as the author of "Vom Musikalisch-Schonen", but he had been an active critic almost through his life. We can devide his criticisms into the following four types : 1 criticism as an applied aesthetics ; 2 criticism also as an applied aesthetics, the explanation of which is done, however, from the historical point of view, 3 criticism from the biographical-historical point of view ; 4 criticism from the 'ausser musikalisch' point of view. The first type of these can be seen in his anti-Wagner criticisms. This antagonism seems to be necessary for him in order to explain his critical point of view objectively and firmly and is cited and discussed on the following three points : 1 criticism against the so-called 'endless melody', 2 criticism against the 'Leitmotiv', 3 criticism against his interpretation as orchestral conduct.
