There seems to be two different courses to research the essence of music. The one tries to define the situation or the function of music in the human life, the other is the attempt to throw light on the constructive elements of music from a fixed angle. And the latter is to be persued here. Keeping my mind on our experiences I here divide as a tentative the unique musical phenomenon into three interrelated phases- 1) directly apprehensive, 2) rationally analyzable and organizable, 3) susceptible to be revealed in the whole expression. Of course, each phase presupposes the whole wave of music. Even in the first tone we feel the force which tends to increase to a whole wave, and the totality of a musical work is a complex of dynamic processes. Between the third phase as a whole and the first or the second phase as its parts, then, there is a dynamic relationship.
