A single specimen (36.8 mm in standard length) of Hazeus elati (Goren, 1984), collected off Tanega-shima Island, Osumi Islands, Kagoshima, Japan, is the first Pacific Ocean occurrence of the species, which to date has been recorded known only from the Red Sea. The species is characterized by 9 or 10 dorsal- and anal-fin rays (9 in the present specimen), 16–19 pectoral-fin rays (19), 23–25 (usually 23 or 24) longitudinal scale rows (23), 7 transverse scale rows, 6–8 predorsal scale rows (7), the preopercle and opercle covered with large scales (the latter condition unable to be assessed due to damage), cheek sensory papillae in longitudinal rows only, and a circular black blotch extending from the fifth to last spines of the 1st dorsal fin. A new standard Japanese name, Manuru-yukatahaze, is proposed for the species.
