We reported on large winter buds newly found in Sandea japonica (≡Conocephalum japonicum). They are similar in structure to normal propagules of the species bearing at the tip of thalli in winter season, but differ in size and shape as well as presence of elongated rhizoids on the ventral surface and thicker stipes which connect the buds to the thalli. These large winter buds continue to grow when they germinate in the following spring and thus are quite comparable to those of Conocephalum conicum complex
