A method of polarographic determination of titanium has been established by using potassium thiocyanatein diluted sulfuric acid as a supporting electrolyte.
Based upon the results of fundamental experiments, . a following procedure has been recommended: To a sample solution containing 0.22.0 mM of titanium. is added potassium thiocyanate until its final concentra tion in the electrolysis solution reaches at 1.0 M, and the pH of the solution is controlled with either sulfuric acid or diluted potassium hydroxide solution until it shows the pH between 0.5 and 1.5.
The half wave potential ( -0.31 V vs. S. C. E. at pH 1.0) of titanium almost agrees with its peak potential. A linear relationship has been obtained in the range of 0.22.0mM for titanium.
Some of the cations and materials, for example copper, tungstate, stannate, phosphate, oxalate, citrate, tartrate, , fluoride etc. interfere with the determination.
The method was applied to the determination of small amount of titanium (in 0.1 and less%) in aluminum alloys and a satisfactory result was obtained with the variation coefficients of 2.6% (DC polarographic method), and of 1.2% (AC polarographic method), for titanium.
