The remaining rate of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air-borne particulate samples was investigated when clean-air was passed through the samples for a long time. Air-borne particulates were collected for 24 h on a glass fiber filter using a Hi-volume sampler, and then, the filter was divided into two parts. One part was used as a control sample. The other part was set on a filter holder of middle volume sampler through which clean-air was passed continuously at the flow-rate of 100 l/min for (219) days. PAHs in the control and air-treated samples were determined by the analytical method which consisted of vacuum sublimation, one-dimensional dual band thin-layer chromatography and spectrofluorometry. The remaining rate, expressed as the ratio of PAH in the control sample and in the air-treated sample, was measured for pyrene, fluoranthene, chrysene, benz(a)anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, perylene, and anthanthrene. These rates were 95% or more even when clean-air was passed through samples for 19 days. The losses of PAHs in the samples were negligible when air treatment was less than 7 days. The results suggest that a middle volume sampler is preferable for a long term sampling of PAHs in environmental air.
