For the determination of aliphatic and aromatic primary amines, the Van Slyke method with certain modifications has been evaluated. Modifications included the use of a heating procedure carbon dioxide gas as a fining agent, and several absorption fluids and appliances for the complete removal of nitrogen oxide. The results indicated that an absorption fluid consisting of 3 parts of a saturated solution of potassium bromide and 1 part sulfuric acid (1:1) was superior, an absorption appliance with high absorption capacity and easy to fill with the absorption fluid was devised. The change in the rate of passing carbon dioxide gas through this improved appliance ( 24 ml/min), and the change in the amount of 40 % NaNO2 used at the rate of 0.61.0 ml gave only a slight effect on the quantitative determination. The square root of standard deviation of error for the quantitative determination of sulfamic acid was 0.04 %. The time required for the determination was 35 min.
