This study explored how the format of tests, whether audio or written, impacts performance in English vocabulary quizzes and the effects on vocabulary learning strategies. Students notably preferred using audio-based learning strategies during preparing for audio format quizzes over written format ones. This suggests that the audio test format encouraged the use of audio-based learning strategies. However, when students switched from audio to written tests, their use of audio-based strategies decreased, showing the format of tests has an inhibitory effect on learning strategies. Additionally, with the exception of the paying attention to the spelling strategy, the use of other vocabulary learning strategies was notably lower than those considered effective. This may be due to students becoming fixated on the strategy developed for written format tests. This research is significant as it clarified test formats have both a facilitating and inhibitory effect on vocabulary learning strategies.
