The purpose of this study is to elucidate what Japanese learners with high spoken English proficiency and no experience in studying or living abroad have practiced in order to acquire a suitable level of daily conversational ability in English while tracing their trajectories. Data were gathered through individual interviews with four participants and were qualitatively analyzed using the Trajectory Equifinality Approach. The result of the study indicates five main factors in common among the interviewees. They are: 1) strengthening grammatical competence; 2) learning phonetic elements; 3) looking for opportunities for output; 4) minimizing anxiety in speaking English with native speakers; and 5) being motivated in speaking English. From these findings, this study suggests that in enhancing speaking ability, linguistic learning as well as cognitive and affective training are necessary.
